Professionals working in the Australian health, community, social service and education sector share many interactions with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people. Experienced practitioners understand the significance of culture, and seek to continue developing their Cultural Intelligence. This special event is centred around the following three questions:
Aboriginal Culture is as wide and vast as the Sea which hold and sustain us. How can Aboriginal Culture be viewed and understood in modern society?Beginning with many unique and different language groups who have endured generations of dispossession, today we have a complex cultural dynamic to understand and work with if we truly wish to impact change.
Culture is a central feature of Aboriginal Identity which encompass many holistic ideals about one's personal life, how they relate to others, and their place in the broader system of life. It provides movement, influencing attitude and behaviour making Culture a key mechanism of change - either toward wellbeing and prosperity, or self-destruction.
In challenging yet rewarding work, it can be easy for practitioners to feel overwhelmed, challenged or stuck when working with Aboriginal people. Can service providers support cultural wellbeing? This event presents an approach to working with Aboriginal people through stages of change, in a way which promote a strong sense of connection to culture while honouring Aboriginal Identity.
Your presenter, KIM MULHOLLAND is a YANYUWA and LARRAKIA man from the Northern Territory. This contrast between traditional Yanyuwa and contemporary Larrakia has granted a unique wealth of knowledge and deep insight into the rich tapestry that is modern Aboriginal Australia.
Those who are effective and proficient workers impact change with our Aboriginal communities in small and large ways, and each play an important role in a greater movement toward a better quality of life and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and a Nation we can truly be proud of.
While people working in the field have gained a great deal of experience fostering relationships with Aboriginal people and learning to understand the significance of Culture, there remains many questions.
What is the role of an ancient Culture in present society?
If culture is an important aspect of social & emotional wellbeing, how do Aboriginal people and families who have been dispossessed from Dreaming, Language and Country, experience a positive connection to culture?
How can a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture, benefit service delivery and achieve greater outcomes?
In this special live event we aim to unravel some of the confusion, provide a deeper understanding of culture and answers to these questions, as well as any other questions you may bring.
